City Projects & Initiatives

The projects featured here represent significant City investments and initiatives that may have a lasting or noticeable impact on the community due to their scope, duration, cost, traffic impacts, or public interest. These projects are generally planned and carried out over a longer period of time, making ongoing public information useful to residents.

This is not a complete list of all City projects. Short-term or reactive work, such as repairs resulting from unexpected damage or other immediate needs, may not be included when the work is completed too quickly to warrant ongoing public communication.

Alice Martinez Rodriguez Park Development Project

The Alice Martinez Rodriguez Park Development Project reimagines the Gilbert Sanchez, Sr. Track and Field Complex (formerly the Hart-Patterson Track and Field Complex) and the Waco Creek Corridor into a vibrant regional park. The new park will serve as a recreation hub for surrounding neighborhoods and visitors while supporting the expansion of the Waco City-Wide Trail System.

Chapel Park Development Project

In 1997, the Waco City Council approved a Joint Use Policy between the City of Waco and Midway Independent School District for the cooperative development and shared use of Chapel Park. Since then, Chapel Park has been a community space that serves visitors of all ages. The existing splash pad and pavilion now require replacement and, in Feb. 2026, City Council approved the contract for new ones.

China Spring Park Project

The China Spring Park Project represents a strategic investment in the recreational and cultural amenities available to the growing China Spring community. This new park will provide residents with enhanced opportunities for outdoor recreation, fitness, and social connectivity, aligning with the City of Waco's mission to foster vibrant, accessible spaces for all.

Downtown Railroad Quiet Zone

The City of Waco is moving forward with a project to establish a railroad quiet zone in the downtown area. This initiative will stop routine train horn blasts along a 1.5-mile stretch of track. Once complete, the quiet zone will improve the quality of life for people who live in, work in, and visit downtown.

Fire Station #4 Construction Project

Upon its expected completion in spring 2027, the new Fire Station #4 will feature three apparatus bays, individual sleeping quarters, and accommodations for up to eight fire personnel per shift, providing enough space for current staff and equipment with room for future expansion.

Speegleville Road Improvements Project

There are no current road closures on Speegleville Road.

The project reconstructs Speegleville Road and the
bridge over the Middle Bosque River from Maple Shade Road to north of Oak Road. The new roadway expands from the existing two-lane configuration to a four lane divided highway separated by a grass median.

Waco Downtown Redevelopment

The City of Waco is partnering with Hunt Real Estate to transform our downtown over the next 12 to 20 years. This project covers more than 100 acres along the Brazos River and focuses on creating a space where our community can gather, grow, and thrive together. Across five unique districts, we are creating space for new businesses, better walkability, and deeper connections to our local culture. Residents and visitors can look forward to signature public spaces like a new town square, a central events lawn, a ballpark, enhanced green spaces, and more. This project is about honoring our history while creating a parks-forward urban center that belongs to all of us.
