Alice Martinez Rodriguez Park Development Project

The Alice Martinez Rodriguez Park project is the creation of a vibrant, inclusive park that will be a destination in the heart of Waco. Spanning nearly 30 acres along Clay Avenue and near the former site of Floyd Casey Stadium, the park will be a community-centered, accessible space that will serve as a hub for recreation, cultural heritage, and community gatherings.

Honoring Community Leaders

On May 13, 2025, Waco Mayor Jim Holmes announced the dedication of Alice Martinez Rodriguez Park in honor of Councilmember Rodriguez’s 26 years of service and her lasting impact on South Waco. The park also celebrates other remarkable leaders whose names will grace key spaces. These dedications ensure the park not only offers recreation but also tells the stories of the people who shaped Waco’s history, culture, and community spirit.

Manuel Gonzalez Fuente de la Libertad – honoring Manuel Gonzalez, WWII veteran, community advocate, and first national LULAC president.
Leonardo Montelongo Sr., Pavilion – honoring Leonardo Montelongo Sr., a postal worker and the founder of the Mi Favorito Spanish radio program.
Gilbert Sanchez Sr. Track and Field – honoring Gilbert Sanchez Sr., founder of the Waco Boxing Club and local business owner.
Pauline Maldonado Chavez Inclusive Playground Area – honoring Pauline Maldonado Chavez, longtime MCC trustee, nurse, and co-owner of El Potosino restaurant.
Puente de Jesus Deleon – honoring Jesus Deleon, founder of La Mutualista Sociedad de Jornaleros, supporting workers and families.
Ernesto Fraga, Sr Street – honoring Ernesto Fraga, Sr., founder and editor of Tiempo newspaper.
Carlos Pecina Jr. Street – honoring Carlos Pecina Jr., former City Councilman, entrepreneur, and community leader.

Project Schedule

The project design commenced in June 2023, with public engagement activities such as open houses and surveys to gather community input. The conceptual vision plan was completed in March 2024, which was followed by the creation of the final design and construction plans.
