About Us

The Waco Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) coordinates transportation planning activities for all of McLennan County.

MPOs were established by the federal government to ensure that transportation decisions within the MPO area are performed in a continuing, comprehensive, and cooperative process, and guided by local and public input. MPOs develop long-range transportation plans and program funds for projects and operations. The plans serve as the roadmap for future projects and programs. MPOs also conduct short-range planning and identify projects and funding sources.

Six to Fix: Safety Demonstration Projects

The Waco Municipal Planning Organization (MPO) is committed to making streets safe, comfortable, and accessible for all modes of travel. This project will implement low-cost, temporary, safety improvements at six high-impact locations across Waco and the surrounding communities. The purpose of the project is to demonstrate innovative safety strategies and gather insight and community feedback from each location. Lessons learned from these locations will help urban planners, engineers, and elected officials repeat this work in more places and improve safety across the region.

Building on the work of the recently completed Waco MPO Safety Action Plan, six high-impact locations have been selected for safety demonstration projects.

Each location presents unique challenges and opportunities to improve safety for people walking, bicycling, and driving. Here is a quick review of all six locations: SS4A Pop-Up Demonstration Projects

Locations include:

  • LaSalle Ave Corridor (Waco, TX)
  • South Valley Mills & Dutton/Memorial Drive (Waco, TX)
  • Be Kind Coffee Downtown Parklet on Washington Ave (Waco, TX)
  • Loop 340 - (Bellmead, TX)
  • Loop 340 & Hwy 77 (Robinson, TX)
  • Hewitt Dr & Panther Way (Hewitt, TX)

Schedule:

In early 2025 work began researching safety best practices and evaluating the unique needs of each project location. Throughout the entire project, input and feedback from the community is vital to ensure the safety concerns are being understood and addressed for the people that live, work, and travel through these areas.

The demonstration projects will be installed for 16 months with time for data collection and community engagement before, during, and after. Insights and lessons learned from all six locations will be compiled into a final report by the summer of 2027.
