Fire Station 4

Fire Station 4

In March of 1893 then-Waco fire chief A.M. Prescott asked Waco city commissioners for permission to establish two more fire stations.  In April he recommended the opening of new stations in North Waco and South Waco.

Five months later, on Thursday September 4th, 1893, a group of men met at John Moore’s store at 5th and Speight to organize a new fire company.  They named it Baylor Hose Company No. 4.  Later that year, the new fire company, also known as South End Station or Baylor Engine Co. No. 4, opened on S. 5th at James Avenue.  For the first 73 years it was located on S. 5th

In 1957 Waco voters passed a bond package and from that $45,000 was used to build a new home for Station 4, which had outgrown its original station.  The City of Waco exchanged the land it owned at 5th and James with land Baylor owned at 10th and Speight and there built a station designed to look more like a home in order to blend in with the surrounding neighborhood.

In July 1966 the Waco City Council toured and accepted the new station and firemen immediately began moving into it.  More than 130 years after its founding, Station 4 continues to protect not only Baylor University but parts of central Waco and a large part of south Waco.  It is home to Engine 4 and Brush 4 and is among the busiest stations in the Waco Fire Department.
