Fire Administration
When the Waco Volunteer Fire Department was organized in April 1873 after a disastrous downtown fire, it was located in the 300 block of Franklin. This was the only station at the time and, consequently, the location of the administration, until Waco Hose and Ladder Co. No. 2 was organized in May 1886.
In May 1892, a new Station 1, or Central Fire Station, opened in the 300 block of Washington, becoming the department's new administrative headquarters. Administrative offices remained there for the next 41 years. By the late 1920s, discussion began about building a new central fire station.
West End Engine Co. No. 2 was organized in 1889 at 115 N. 12th. In 1932, the city decided to build a new station for the company on land near 11th and Columbus, designed by T. Brooks Pearson. The new Central Fire Station was formally dedicated and opened on Thursday, February 23, 1933. At that time, administrative offices were moved from Station 1 on Washington to Station 2 at 1016 Columbus, where the chief’s office would remain for the next 89 years.
In 2018, the City of Waco announced plans to buy the former 25th Street Theater for a new headquarters. Due to the building's poor condition, it was demolished, and a new administrative office was constructed. Construction began in 2020, and on March 23, 2022, the department held a grand opening and open house for the new administration offices and adjacent Station 6 on N. 25th.
