Station 1 holds a special place in Waco history as the first station of the Waco Fire Department. Following a major downtown fire in March 1873, local residents organized Rescue Hook and Ladder No. 1, followed shortly by Engine Co. No. 1, to provide fire protection for the growing city. The original station was located at 310 Franklin Avenue and served the community for many years.
In 1888, concerns about the condition of the Franklin Avenue station led city leaders to approve construction of a new facility in the 300 block of Washington Avenue, which opened in 1892. Known for many years as the Central Fire Station, it remained in service until damage from the 1953 tornado forced crews to relocate. A new station at 1st and Bridge opened in 1956, followed by an additional Station 1 at Webster and 1st Street in 1973.
In 2007, Waco voters approved bond funding to relocate Station 1 once again to better serve downtown, East Waco, and the Timbercrest neighborhood. The current Station 1, opened in 2010 on Peach Street, is home to Engine 1, Truck 1, Battalion Chief 1, the confined space rescue team, and the swift water rescue team.
