Interstate 35 Waco South Construction Update
Published on June 16, 2025
The Texas Department of Transportation is preparing to widen and fully reconstruct northbound I-35 from S Loop 340 to 12th Street as part of the My35 Waco South Construction Project.
Beginning Monday, June 23, 2025, crews plan to begin reducing both directions of I-35 from 12th Street to S Loop 340 to two lanes, starting with the southbound main lanes. Various lane closures will be in place each night for this work. Please follow all directional signage and watch for crews in the work zones.
Once traffic is shifted, crews will close several northbound exits and direct connects. TxDOT and the contractor expect this configuration to be in place for approximately two years.
Closures
- Loop 340 direct connect to northbound I-35
Drivers will be directed to exit at I-35 South just east of Bagby Avenue and use the cloverleaf to access northbound I-35
- Northbound I-35 exits to New Road (Exit 331) and to Valley Mills Drive/La Salle Avenue (Exit 333A)
Drivers will be directed to exit at S Loop 340/Marlin (Exit 330A)
- Northbound I-35 exit for 17th/18th Streets (Exit 334A)
Drivers will be directed to exit at 24th – 19th Streets (Exit 333B)
- Eastbound S. Valley Mills Drive direct connect to northbound I-35
My35 Waco South Project Overview
Construction on the south portion of Interstate 35 in Waco started in February 2025 and will run through early 2029. The project focuses on the stretch between 12th Street and Highway 6.
The $234 million project will upgrade three miles of I-35 and will result in:
- Eight wider main lanes (four lanes in each direction)
- Continuous frontage roads with redesigned ramps
- Enhanced pedestrian and bicycle safety with new sidewalks
- Rebuilt crossings with U-turn lanes
- Utility and drainage improvements
The Valley Mills Drive crossing will see the biggest change with the removal of the northbound flyover.
This project follows the successful completion of the I-35 Waco north section between North Loop 340 and 12th Street, which was finished in November 2022. Once completed, this project will mark the final piece of the I-35 reconstruction project through Waco.
During construction, please be sure to drive carefully and obey all traffic signs. We appreciate your patience as these improvements will benefit drivers for years to come.
