Update: Herring Avenue Bridge Rehabilitation Project
Published on January 09, 2026
Construction continues on the Herring Avenue Bridge Rehabilitation Project over the Brazos River. Starting Tuesday, January 20, the pedestrian walkway and the right northbound lane will be closed to the public for about four months (weather permitting).
The project includes bridge rail and pedestrian walkway improvements, bridge joint replacements, vegetation removal, minor concrete repairs, a polymer concrete overlay on the Herring Avenue Bridge over the Brazos River, and replacement of outdated or damaged guardrail. The project is anticipated to be complete in early fall 2026.
Bridges require periodic maintenance and repair to mitigate degradation and extend their useful life. The City of Waco has identified repairs that are still manageable from a cost standpoint, so we are completing them now before they worsen and become more expensive.
Thank You for Your Cooperation
Please adhere to all posted signage near the bridge, which will be placed in advance to warn of upcoming work. Message boards will also be posted ahead of any half-bridge closure to notify drivers and direct traffic to established detours.
We urge all residents to drive carefully through the construction zones. We sincerely thank you for your patience and cooperation as we work to ensure the long-term safety and reliability of the Herring Avenue Bridge.
