More Heat Safety Tips

  • Drink water (or other hydrating beverages) often. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty.
  • Avoid unnecessary work and activities outside or in buildings without air conditioning.
  • Wear light, loose-fitting clothes.
  • Stay in an air conditioned area. Air conditioning is the best protective factor against heat-related illnesses.
  • Check in on your friends, family, and neighbors during heat waves.

Protect Your Pets

During the extreme Texas heat, it is too hot to walk your pets in the day on pavement. On a hot day, pavement can reach up to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. An easy way to check if it's a good time to walk your dog is to touch the pavement with the back of your hands for seven seconds. If it's too hot for your hands, then it's too hot for your dog's paws.
