Fire Station 2

Fire Station 2

Station 2, originally known as West End Engine Co. No. 2, was established in 1889 at 115 N. 12th Street. This building is still standing and is recognized as the oldest former fire station in Waco.

Over 40 years later, the fire department decided to construct a new, larger station. In February 1933, the new Station 2 officially opened at 1016 Columbus Avenue. For more than 60 years, it served the downtown area and parts of North Waco. The two-story station accommodated both an engine and a ladder truck, and later included space for the assistant chief and a rescue truck.

In January 1998, a study suggested relocating the station to improve fire protection for the area near 30th and Lake Shore. Ultimately, it was determined that the new station would be built at 27th and Park Lake.

When the Columbus station closed, it marked the end of Waco's last two-story fire station in operation, which still featured a pole that firefighters used to quickly descend from the second floor to the engine room. The current Station 2 was dedicated on August 16, 2000, and is home to Engine 2 and Truck 2.
