What is a wetland?

Wetlands are areas where water covers the soil all year or for periods of time during the year. Wetlands support aquatic and terrestrial species.

Why were the Lake Waco Wetlands built?

The Lake Waco Wetland Project began in late August of 2001. The Wetlands mitigate the loss of habitat from raising Lake Waco by seven feet.
The land is leased from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Where does the Lake Waco Wetlands get its water from?

It comes from the Bosque River. This watershed has a drainage area of more than 1,650 square miles and feeds into Lake Waco, our drinking water source.

How many gallons of water are pumped through the Wetlands per day?

Around 11 million gallons of water are pumped through the wetland per day on average.

Can I donate to the Lake Waco Wetlands?

Yes, donations are always welcomed. The Lake Waco Wetlands is a nonprofit organization and offers many sponsorship opportunities:
  • Cattail Level $150 – $250
  • Duck Potato Level $250 – $500
  • Pickerelweed Level $500 – $1,000
  • Water Lily Level $1,000 – and more

How/when do I visit the Lake Waco Wetlands?

The Lake Waco Wetlands and the Research and Education Center are open to the public. 
Pedestrian gate access to the wetland grounds is available even when the Research and Education Center is not open.
