Dr. Maria Franquiz is a nationally recognized scholar in education with an expertise in the field of bilingual education. In addition to her roles at the University of Utah College of Education, she is co-editor of Bilingual Research Journal, the premier research journal in bilingual education, and has published two books and numerous scholarly articles in prestigious journals. Bilingualism in education, especially public schooling, and in society is a critical issue facing our city, state and nation. Increases in diverse language and cultures warrant our attention if we are to succeed in addressing our students’ educational needs. Focusing on bilingualism as a strength versus a liability has the potential to shed positive light on issues of multiculturalism facing our educational system. During her time in Waco, Dr. Franquiz will also give presentations at Region 12, meet with Baylor education students, and tour local school campuses where the School of Education is collaborating to train future teachers.
