The Texas Collection presents "On Changing Tides: Doris Miller, Pearl Harbor and the Civil Rights Movement" featuring Dr. T. Michael Parrish of the Baylor University Department of History. A native Wacoan, Miller served as a messman in the United States Navy and earned the Navy Cross for bravery due to his actions during the December 7, 1941 battle. Miller would go on to become the face of a recruiting drive and the nascent Civil Rights Movement. He died when his new ship, the Liscome Bay, was torpedoed by the Japanese in 1943. Dr. Parrish's lecture will explore Miller's life and legacy. His talk will be based on his book, Doris Miller, Pearl Harbor and the Birth of the Civil Rights Movement. The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served, and Dr. Parrish will be available to sign copies of his book after the lecture. The Baylor Bookstore will be on-hand to sell copies of the book as well.
