Protect Your Pipes During Freezing Weather

While it doesn't happen too often around here, we have been known to experience some freezing weather from time to time.

Frozen pipes can create a real problem! There are some actions you can take to protect your pipes and try to prevent them from freezing even when the temperature drops down below 32 degrees. Here are a few things you can do:

  • Secure outdoor hoses, and insulate outside valves and faucets.
  • Let water drip. A trickle of hot and cold water might be all it takes to keep your pipes from freezing. Let warm water drip overnight when temperatures are cold, preferably from a faucet on an outside wall.
  • Open cabinet doors, allowing heat to get to un-insulated pipes under sinks and appliances near exterior walls.
  • If you find a leak on your property, turn off the water (using the valve next to your meter) until you can repair the leak
  • See a leak in the street? Let us know right away by calling 299-CITY (2489).
