What is Influenza (Flu)?
Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The best way to prevent flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year.
The Health District receives reports from hospitals, clinics, laboratories, school, nursing homes, and other healthcare partners on the number of flu and flu-like illnesses on a weekly basis year-round. This information is calculated and reported to the Texas Department of State Health Services.

Flu activity is defined as:
- Lab-confirmed case: Flu A, Flu B, Not Differentiated Flu
- Influenza-like illness activity (ILI): ILI is defined as fever over 100ºF and cough and/or a sore throat in the absence of another diagnosis
