Homestead Exemption

A homestead exemption lowers the property taxes on your home by lowering its taxable value. For example, if your home is valued at $50,000 and you receive a $15,000 exemption, your home will be taxed as if it were worth $35,000. Waco homeowners who already receive a homestead exemption will not have to reapply to receive this new tax cut. However, homeowners who have not applied for a homestead exemption in the past may do so at the McLennan County Appraisal District, 216 N. 6th Street.

To qualify, a resident must both own and occupy the home as his or her principal residence as of January 1, 2002. Citizens who are 65 years of age or older may qualify for an additional over-65 homestead exemption and those who are service connected disabled veterans may also be eligible for an additional exemption. In both these cases, separate applications must be submitted at the McLennan County Appraisal District, 216 N. 6th Street.

There is no cost to apply for the homestead exemption. The forms are available online, click here: Homestead Exemption Forms
