From City Manager
Larry D. Groth

I would like to personally invite each of you to
attend our “Employee Appreciation Day” on Friday, Oct. 3 from 11
a.m. to 2 p.m. in Chisholm Hall at the Waco Convention Center.
The City Management Team will be serving a free lunch.
Then employees are invited to participate in a number of carnival-style
events including basketball skills contests, a golf “closest-to-the-hole”
contest, a cake walk, and many other activities.
A number of great prizes will be awarded during the
festivities, so you won’t want to miss it! This is our small way
of expressing our sincere appreciation to each of you for your faithful
service to our citizens every day.
The event will also serve as the kickoff celebration
for this year’s United Way Campaign, which will be held from Oct.
17 -Nov. 5. During that time, representatives from each department
will be distributing pledge cards to all city employees.
There are multiple ways to support these agencies
that benefit our individual families and community. You can choose
the payroll deduction option, give a one-time pledge or select direct
billing. You can also designate a specific United Way agency that
you want your donation to support.
All employees are encouraged to look at their finances
to see what they can give. The United Way suggested “fair share”
amount is one percent of the annual salary for exempt employees
and one hour of pay per month for non-exempt employees.
Although everyone is asked to consider a “fair share”
amount, I encourage each of you to at least consider the following
challenge: $10 per pay period ($240 per year) for exempt employees,
and $3 per pay period ($72 per year) for nonexempt employees.
You know best what your family can contribute. Those
who are unable to support these agencies financially still may be
able to volunteer their time.
The United Way is about improving the quality of life
for families in our community. Giving is a choice, and it’s the
right thing to do. When we give, it means we have less in our pocket
book, but the reality is we gain so much more.
There’s the satisfaction of doing something to help
others. You are supporting after- school programs, disaster relief
efforts, providing food and medical care for local families in need
and many more much needed services for the people of McLennan County.
Many of those served now and in the past are our fellow employees.
I am continually impressed by the giving nature of
our employees. I want to thank you for your past contributions and
for what I know you will do this year in support of the United Way.
There is much more information about the Oct. 3 Employee
Appreciation Day activities on the front page of this edition of
City Talk. I look forward to seeing you there - it’s going to be
a day to remember!
