City employees enjoyed some friendly competition while raising
funds for the United Way.
The 2nd annual City of Waco Employee Appreciation Day was held
on Oct. 19 at the Waco Convention Center. Through the various
contests, employees raised $1,309.87 for the United Way.
Some of the fiercest competition could be found among the participants
in the basketball shooting contest. In the individual category,
Randy Childers, Inspection Services, was the best free throw shooter
and Anthony Betters, Water Utilities, was the best three point
shooter.
In the team category, the best free throw shooters were Art
Pertile, City Attorney; Earl Stinnett, Parks & Recreation; and
Bryan Gray, Purchasing. The best three point shooting team included
Ezell Scott, Parks & Recreation; along with Anthony Betters and
Travis Daniels, both from Water Utilities.
The pumpkin decorating contest winner was the Human Resources
department with an artistic creation resembling a hamburger.
The winner of the cake decorating contest was Ryntha Dorough,
Water Utilities, with the theme of “Dreaming of a White Christmas.”
The “Who’s That Baby Contest” resulted in a tie. Susan Curry and
Karen Clark both won spa treatments for matching the most employees
with their baby pictures.
During the celebration, City Manager Larry Groth presented an
award to Art Pertile to thank him for his support of our annual
United Way campaign. Over the years, Pertile has agreed to be
dunked, weighed and pelted with golf balls all for a good cause!
While many employees completed their United Way pledge cards
at the event, employees have until Nov. 7 to turn in their cards
if they were unable to attend the celebration.

Waco Solid Waste Driver Named
One of the Top Drivers in the U.S.

You may remember earlier this year one of our own,
Richard Perkins, won first place at a state-level competition for
Solid Waste drivers. The competition involves a complicated obstacle
course the drivers must complete with narrow lanes, sudden stops
and backing maneuvers.
Richard’s first place win made him eligible to compete
at the Internationals, against drivers from all over the United
States. It came as no surprise to us that he again took top prize
in his category! We’re proud of you, Richard!
