From City Manager
Larry D. Groth
For the past 30 years, the Waco Convention Center,
located in the heart of our city has served as one of the leading
meeting facilities in Texas. Its central location between Dallas
and Austin makes it the ideal setting for various conventions, events
and meetings.
In 2007 alone, the Waco Convention Center hosted 346
events, which have brought an overall economic impact of almost
$23.4 million. The money these visitors spend eating at our restaurants,
shopping at our stores, and staying in our hotels helps Waco succeed
as a tourism and convention destination. It’s amazing to think how
much these convention groups benefit our city.
Convention groups generate money from outside of Waco
and they are important to our community for their overall economic
impact. Local organizations use the Convention Center for regular
events each year and it is important that the facility be first-class
for those events as well. The Convention Center is in great need
of a major renovation, so we are proud that the citizens of Waco
voted to commit $17.5 million in general obligation bond funds to
renovate and expand the Waco Convention Center.
This project will involve a complete external and
internal renovation of the facility, including the addition of a
commercial kitchen for in-house catering service, additional breakout
meeting rooms, service corridors and more pre-function space in
both the upper and lower level lobbies. With literally every room
and public space being changed, this Convention Center will have
a whole new look to it.
The renovation is expected to begin as early as the
fall 2008 with the duration of the renovation lasting anywhere from
18-24 months in its entirety. From the room set-ups to the ability
to handle more events simultaneously with less traffic and noise,
the renovation of the Convention Center will allow Waco to hold
even bigger and better events, bringing in even more of a significant
economic impact than before.
The architectural drawings are worth viewing – it’s
exciting to see how much the Convention Center will improve as our
downtown area grows. To see the Waco Convention Center architectural
renderings and to read the most up-to-date information about the
renovation, visit the Waco Convention & Visitors Bureau Web site
