Raise the Roof Week
October 11-18

Crystal Jones, Human Resources, helps build a home for the Garcia family as part of last year’s Raise the Roof project.

City of Waco employees are once again invited to come out and assist Habitat for Humanity in building a home for a family during our annual Raise the Roof Project.

This project has received a national award and is highly recognized as a fun, innovative, learning experience.

City Manager, Larry Groth has once again generously agreed to allow employees to work on the project up to 8 hours, during normal business hours, with supervisor approval. This year’s project is scheduled to begin on Saturday, Oct. 11 and City workers will conclude their part in this project on Saturday, Oct. 18.

Hours of construction are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day and meals and snacks will be provided.

Volunteers will receive a special Raise the Roof T-shirt. Any department wishing to donate snacks, drinks or a meal are encouraged to do so.

The house will be built at 718 Frost for the Joiner family. If interested in volunteering, please contact Dedri Hafer at 750-5670 or by e-mail at dedrih@ci.waco.tx.us. Click here for: Volunteer Form

Waco Cultural Arts Fest

The 5th annual Waco Cultural Arts Fest will take place Saturday, Sept. 20 from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 21 from noon to 7 p.m. at Indian Spring Park.

The Waco Cultural Arts Fest is a free celebration of arts and culture, in downtown Waco, and features artists, live music, dance, poetry, food and art activities for the entire family. Activities include wood and clay sculpture, painting, and mask making.

Musicial performances begin with a salute to our young artists. The Waco Junior Symphony Orchestra opens the main stage followed by Waco’s own “Ambassadors” Steel Drum Band from A. J. Moore High School.

“Del Espadin” will bring the color and drama of Flamenco to the festival. The “Indian Extravaganza” will showcase beautiful saris and Indian Classical dance by Sharmada Srikant, a senior at Baylor University.

Saturday headliners include Grammy award winning “Brave Combo,” America’s premier contemporary polka band and “The Inner City All Stars.” Then get ready for Country and Western singing star Dale Watson, closing headliner for the festival. The KWBU PBS Stage features a wide variety of entertainment on both days of the festival, including the now traditional Dance-a-Thon featuring many Waco dance studios.

Waco Cultural Arts Fest is a celebration of the arts and culture in our community. The event is free of charge thanks to the support of the Waco Cultural Art Fest sponsors and underwriters including the City of Waco. World Rabies Day 2008

Health educators around the world are again joining together on Sept. 28 to raise awareness and understanding about the importance of rabies prevention. Rabies is the oldest and deadliest disease known to mankind and the Waco-McLennan County Public Health District is supporting this initiative.

Rabies prevention starts with the animal owner. Protect yourself, your pet and your community by taking animals to be vaccinated. Avoid stray animals and wildlife.

If you are bitten, wash bite wounds with soap and water and seek medical attention immediately. If your pet is bitten, consult your veterinarian immediately.

Prompt and appropriate treatment after being bitten and before the disease develops can stop rabies infection and/or prevent the disease in humans and animals.

More information on World Rabies Day can be found at the official Web site, www.worldrabiesdy.org.
