Date: 10/18/2013

Time & Place:
1:30 pm Waco City Hall / Heritage Square

The Texas Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services (DARS) and the Waco Mayor’s Committee for People with Disabilities will recognize five local businesses that have demonstrated a commitment to the employment of people with disabilities. Local employers Prophecy Media Group, Waco Distribution Center, Walgreens Store #4607, Temple Wal-Mart, and Brazos Valley Center for Independent Living will be honored for making a significant contribution to promoting workplace diversity and accessibility. Following the awards ceremony, residents are invited to participate in the Central Texas Walk-N-Roll Celebration, a free event in downtown Waco that will have exhibitions, refreshments, and activities for children. This event raises awareness about disabilities during National Disability Employment Awareness Month, a campaign held every October by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy. The Walk-N-Roll Celebration is presented by DARS with the following community partners: the Waco Mayor’s Committee on People with Disabilities, the Waco Founder Lions Club, Workforce Solutions, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Education Service Center Region 12, Heart of Central Texas Independent Living, and Amerigroup. DARS is a state agency whose mission is to ensure Texas is a state where people with disabilities and children who have developmental delays enjoy the same opportunities as other Texans to live independent and productive lives.
