Stilettos to Stetsons: Women on the Trail

Janice Grelle, female cattle rancher, details the true story of how a British schoolteacher became a Texas cattle rancher and how women navigated the cattle drives on the Chisholm Trail. Grelle’s book, Stilettos to Stetsons, will be available for purchase and signed. Admittance to the lecture is free for members and included in general admission for the public ($8 for adults, $7 for seniors, and $6 for children). Coffee and pastries will be provided prior to the lecture.

The class will focus on Five Civilized Tribes research (Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, & Seminole), but these strategies can be applied to other tribes as well.

Earth Sciences Week

The Mayborn Museum Complex is proud to host Earth Sciences Week from October 9, 2017 through October 13, 2017 with daily activities from 10:00am to 2:00pm. Earth Science Week, an annual national program, promotes awareness of what geoscience tells us about human interaction with the planet’s natural systems and processes. The Museum and Baylor University researchers will offer learning resources and activities to engage young people and others in exploring the relationships between human activity and the geosphere (earth), hydrosphere (water), atmosphere (air), and biosphere (life).

Climate Change: Earth's Past, Present, and Future

Join Dr. Dan Peppe, Associate Professor and Graduate Program Director in Baylor University’s Department of Geosciences, and other Baylor professors and students as they help us promote the annual Earth Science Week. The Mayborn Museum is proud to host Climate Change: Earth’s Past, Present and Future featuring Kerry Cook from University of Texas at Austin and Dr. Sarah Feakins from University of Southern California. They will present research on the past, present, and future implications of climate change. The symposium will conclude with a panel discussion featuring our two speakers and Baylor University professors. Teen After Hours: Five Nights at the Library

Things will get creepy when we play life-sized Five Nights at Freddy's. Welcome to your new summer job--where kids and adults alike come for fun! After dark, though, things are getting a little crazy! Freddy Fazbear and his animatronic friends are not on their best behavior. It's your job to keep things in line but you have to protect yourself, too! The library has tons of great hiding places, so find a good one and stay safe until the time runs out. Snacks and other games will also be part of the fun. Remember that you must be at least 13 to attend an after hours event.

Robert and Shana ParkeHarrison - Free Public Lecture

Robert and Shana ParkeHarrison will be giving a free lecture about their photographic art that has been published and exhibited extensively over the past couple decades. They construct fantasies in the guise of environmental performances for the protagonists of their images. The artists combine elaborate sets within vast landscapes to address issues surrounding man's relationship to the earth and technology while additionally delving into the human condition. Robert ParkeHarrison studied photography at the Kansas City Art Institute and the University of New Mexico. In 1999 he was the recipient of a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship. Shana ParkeHarrison received a degree in painting from William Woods College. She went on to study Dance history and metalsmithing at the University of New Mexico. The ParkeHarrisons' collaboration has developed organically over the past eighteen years. Their works are included in numerous collections including Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Art Institute of Chicago and the International Museum of Photography at George Eastman House. They are represented by Catherine Edelman Gallery in Chicago andSleteGallery in Los Angeles.

Halloween should be a safe and fun holiday for all children — including those with food allergies! Join the team at Allergy and Asthma Care of Waco as we host our first annual Teal Pumpkin Project event. We want to support FARE’s initiative to provide a safe Halloween for all children. A teal pumpkin left at your doorstep indicates that you have safe, non-food items available for trick or treaters this Halloween. Join us as we paint our pumpkins teal and support ALL of our kids! Charlotte Cotton - Free Public Lecture

Charlotte Cotton is a curator, writer and creative consultant who explores photographic culture. She has held positions including curator of photographs at the Victoria and Albert Museum, head of programming at The Photographers’ Gallery in London and the curator, head of the Department of Photography at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and curator-in-residence at the International Center of Photography, NY. Her book, The Photograph as Contemporary Art, has been a key text in its charting of the rise of photography as an undisputed art form in the 21st century. She has curated photography and contemporary art exhibitions for museums, international art festivals and biennials, including in the UK, US, mainland Europe, Israel and South Korea. This lecture is sponsored by Texas Humanities and the Texas Photographic Society, as well as support from Creative Waco.

Schoolhouse Rock Live!

CYT Waco presents: A pop culture phenomenon comes to the musical stage in Schoolhouse Rock Live! The Emmy Award-winning 1970s Saturday morning cartoon series that taught history, grammar, math and more through clever, tuneful songs is not only making a small-screen comeback, it's lighting up stages everywhere – from school multi-purpose rooms to university and regional theatres all around the country. Schoolhouse Rock Live! follows Tom, a nerve-wracked school teacher who is nervous about his first day of teaching. It's time to exercise your listening skills and imagination at Ready, Set, Draw! Each month, listen to Ms. Kelsie read parts of books and use your imagination to see what she is describing. Annual Genealogy Lock-in "Discover History for Yourself"

A day full of exciting genealogy-related programs, local and professional genealogists, hereditary societies, and local/state-wide organizations will be available to help visitors with their family research. A class for beginners starts at noon with additional programs throughout the day featuring research in Texas, newspaper databases, Czech immigration, regional depositories, WWI, orphan train riders, Revolutionary soldier and cemetery databases. Preschool Storytime

Kids ages 3-6 get to build listening and communication skills while they have FUN, learn about other cultures and grow their imaginations. Hear great stories and take home a craft!

Future Coders

It's never too early to think about the future! Today's kids are tomorrow's coders, so join us at the library to learn the basics of coding. Using state of the art hardware, software and offline games, we will learn how to talk to computers and get them to help us solve the problems of the future. Have FUN learning problem solving and creative thinking every week!
