Descriptions of Programs Classroom programs:

  • Bingo - A common favorite focusing on pesticides and environmental safety.
  • Compost demonstration - Students participate in building a compost pile from organic materials. Demonstration needs an outside area at the school to place the compost pile (program may also be held at Miss Nellie's Pretty Place which then requires a field trip).
  • Dangerous materials - Gives students an overview of dangerous materials commonly found in homes, e.g. oil, antifreeze, batteries, tires, paint, and cleaning products.
  • Environmental challenge - After discussion of environmental topics, the students take the challenge test - an actual game-show style quiz.
  • General recycling program - Discussion of the basics of recycling (why, how, what). Actual recycled products and recyclables will be examined.
  • Jeopardy - A game show program that focuses on a variety of environmental issues. ·
  • Worm composting - Teaches students about nature's way of recycling organic materials. Worms and finished compost will be brought into the classroom to view.
  • Working model of a landfill - A model of a landfill will be brought to the classroom as a demonstration. The landfill model shows liners, ground water wells, ground water tables, cities, and leachate collection. Fieldtrips / tours (require transportation to the site):
  • Composting - Students participate in building a compost pile from organic materials at Miss Nellie's Pretty Place.
  • Habitat for Humanity's ReStore - Discover how the ReStore helps to keep trash out of the landfill by recycling and reselling used building materials. ReStore staff will lead the tour.
  • Landfill tour - Showcases the daily operation of the landfill and addresses environmental issues regarding trash disposal at landfills. Students will see large landfill equipment in action. Requires transportation to and through the City of Waco landfill off Hwy 84. Weather must be dry for the tour to take place. Works well in conjunction with the landfill model!
  • Recycling center tour - Students tour the recycling drop-off center off Cobbs Drive, help recycle items, and learn what happens to the recyclables when they leave the center.

Please note:

  • We are able to customize programs, so please call if you need a specific program to fit your needs.
  • If desired, many programs can be adapted so that students have to solve mathematical problems.
  • An outdoor classroom is available in Cameron Park. Please call a park ranger for more information 254.750.8057.
  • All of these programs are free!
  • A supervising adult must remain with the group during the programs.
  • Programs are most effective when students have had some prior discussion with teacher on topic.
  • Reserve your programs early for Texas Recycles Day (November 15) and Earth Day (April 22)!
