Don’t Throw Away that Television!
At midnight on February 17, 2009, the broadcast television signal that has been in use for decades will be changed from an analog signal to a digital one. This will provide a clearer picture, and will free some transmission space for emergency services. Unless your television is relatively new and equipped to receive a digital signal, you will not be able to watch TV. But you don’t have to get a new TV - converter boxes are available that allow your existing TV to receive the new signal. The converters are available where most TVs are sold.
The U.S. Congress has created a program to help ease the transition to digital TV and is offering a $40 coupon toward the cost of purchasing a converter. For more information,
visit https://www.dtv2009.gov or call 1-888-DTV-2009.
Note: If you receive your signal from a cable service or satellite, you will not need a converter.
Signs of the Times
Waco's alley dumpsters are getting a makeover, with new graphics and a program designed to foster increased awareness against alley dumping. Only bagged residential garbage should go into the dumpsters, and nothing should be left outside of a dumpster.
Large bulky items should be placed in front of the residence for pickup on normal trash collection days. Dumpster diving and scavenging are not only dangerous, it's illegal. To report dumping and other illegal activities in alleys and around dumpsters, please call 299-2611.

CHIPPING OF THE GREEN
Start the New Year off right by recycling your Christmas tree. Keep Waco Beautiful will once again offer Chipping of the Green at the Paul Tyson Field parking lot on Saturday, January 3 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Trade your tree for a bag of fragrant mulch that you can use in your yard or in sachets in your closet, and also receive a small native tree sapling to plant and enjoy.
