Police Cadet Program

The Cadet Program is a partnership between the Waco Police Department, McLennan Community College and the Rapoport Foundation. It provides high school graduates pursuing a career in a law enforcement an introduction into the law enforcement field, and the opportunity to obtain an Associates Degree in Criminal Justice at MCC through a grant paid for by the Rapoport Foundation (includes tuition and books).

SALARY

As a cadet you will work an average of 16 hours per week at $7.88 per hour and a 40 hour week during summer break.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Participants in the Cadet Program gain exposure to and understanding of police work performed in a municipal police department.

Police Cadets attend MCC as full time students and also serve as non-sworn police auxiliary personnel working an average of (21) twenty-one hours per week.

The following duties represent the principal job duties; however, they are not all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Assist personnel in taking information from citizens about criminal activities and fill out offense reports.
  • Assist personnel in receiving 911 calls and dispatching.
  • Assist with traffic and crowd control during special events.
  • Working with other divisions and police employees within the department on special projects.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Age 17 to 21, however, must not have reached your 20th birthday before hire date.
  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain by date of hire, a valid Texas driver’s license.
  • Must have and maintain a good driving record. Must not have been convicted of any felony.
  • Vision at least 20/100 in each eye, correctable to 20/20. Normal color and peripheral vision.
  • Must not have been convicted of any criminal offense above the grade of Class B misdemeanor or a Class B misdemeanor within the last ten years from the date of court order.
  • Must not have been convicted of any family violence offense.
  • Normal hearing in both ears.
  • Must be physically fit.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written directions; read, communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; and to provide quality customer service to the public.

Applicants must also:

  • Submit a completed McLennan Community College application for admission and official high school transcript or General Educational Development (GED) to the Office of Student Admission.
  • Take the Texas Academic Skills Program (TASP) Test or the ACCUPLACER and have passed all parts, unless exempt or waived.
  • Complete applications for Financial Aid with MCC Financial Aid Department.
  • Maintain at least a 2.0 grade point average as a full-time student at MCC.

SELECTION PROCESS

  • Personal History Statement - Applicants are required to complete a Personal History Statement and attach all verifying documents.
  • Background Investigation– The investigation will include a thorough check of police records, personal information, reference checks, driving record, etc. as well as submitting to a polygraph examination.
  • Oral Interview– Members of the oral interview board will evaluate cadet candidates on job-related dimensions.
  • Physical Examination– Appropriate physical examinations shall be required of all applicants. The examination shall be given by a physician who is licensed by the Texas State Board of Examiners and paid by the City of Waco.

Application forms can be picked up at the Waco Police Department Personnel Unit located at 721 N. 4th Street, Waco, Texas 76701. Applications are available Monday-Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
