Waco Citizens Police Academy
The Waco Citizens Police Academy graduated the first
class November 7, 1991. Since that time, the Waco Police Department
conducts two classes per year; one in the Spring and one in the
Fall.
Students learn about all aspects of police work and
have a much better understanding of police procedure by the time
they graduate.
In the academy, students are given an opportunity
to experience what an officer's job entails. They are given different
scenarios throughout the academy as "police" role players. This
not only gives them a better understanding of an officer's point
of view but also a better understanding as to why they use some
of the procedures they use.
During the course, students interact with various
Units throughout the Department. The S.W.A.T. team demonstrates
their actions and procedures, while the K-9 Unit demonstrate narcotic
and article searches.
Students also learn the procedures and dangers of
traffic stops, Building Searches, Crime Scene Investigations and
experience a two session class on Self Defense. By the end of the
academy, students have a better understanding of how to be a more
informative witness and how to report crime in their own area.
Once students graduate, they will have the opportunity
to join the Waco Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association and
continue as a Waco Police Volunteer.
