Friends of the Library Book Sale
The Friends of the Waco-McLennan County Library invite you to attend the 46th annual Book Sale on Nov. 13-16 at the Heart of Texas fairgrounds. One of the largest book sales in the Southwest, the Friends’ sale features more than 100,000 books, CDs, videos and more.
General sale books, videos and tapes will be priced at $1.50 and paperbacks for $1.00. Children’s books are 50 cents to $1.50. The Collectors’ Corner has an assortment of unique, rare and special books, which are priced individually.
Admission to the sale on Thursday is $5 per adult; children 14 and under are free. Ticket sales begin at 8 a.m. The following three days admission is free. Bargain shoppers should be sure to return on Sunday when hardback and paperback books will be sold for $8 per bag - tax included and Collector’s corner items will be half-price.

Thanksgiving Collection Schedule
Solid Waste administration offices and Cobbs Convenience Center will be closed Thursday and Friday, Nov. 27 and 28, for the Thanksgiving holiday. The landfill will be closed Thursday, but will observe its normal operating hours on Friday.
Thursday’s trash collection will take place a day early, on Wednesday, Nov. 26 (the day before Thanksgiving). Friday’s pickup (including recycling, brush and bulky waste) will take place as usual.

River and Trail Cleanup Day
The Parks and Recreation Department and Keep Waco Beautiful will host a River and Trail Cleanup Day from 8 a.m. to noon on Nov. 22.
Volunteers are invited to participate in this effort to beautify the Brazos River Corridor. A hot dog lunch will be provided. Participants should wear pants and closed-toe shoes. For information, call 750-8057.

Children’s Library Activities
Parents and their children ages 12 – 36 months are invited to Toddler Time at the Central Library, 1717 Austin Ave. Two sessions are held on Wednesdays at 9:45 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Lots of movement through songs, chants, finger plays, and stories provide language enrichment for this special age group.
Storytimes for ages 3 – 6 years of age are held weekly at 10:30 a.m. at all four library locations. November program themes include deer, hats, Thanksgiving and Native Americans. Special Storytimes include Ms. Frizzle from Magic School Bus, Disney on Ice skater and Mrs. Baird’s bakery.Homework Help is also provided at the libraries this fall. Please call 750-5974 for a tutoring schedule.
Kids’ Computer Classes continue once a month at the Hoover Library, 1428 Wooded Acres. The one-hour class is held on the 2nd Thursday of the month from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. and is for students in grades 3 – 7. “Internet Search Skills” is presented on Nov. 13, and “Using the On-Line Library Catalog” will be offered on Dec. 11. Space is limited so please call 750-5956 to register.
Park Renovations
As a result of Waco’s bond election, parks throughout Waco will receive improvements during the upcoming year. Unfortunately, many parks will be temporarily closed during the renovations.
Currently, Cameron Park East is closed to the public, as are sections of Cameron Park and the trail system. In the coming months, various neighborhood parks and South Waco Recreation Center will also be under construction.
Construction updates will be posted online at www.waco-texas.com. The projects are expected to be completed by spring 2010. For information, call 750-5980.
Ride Cameron Park
The City of Waco and Bicycles Outback invite women of all ages to take part the annual Ride Cameron Park mountain bike clinic on Nov. 1 and 2.
This year’s clinic will be held at Lover’s Leap in Cameron Park. The event is free and includes training sessions with professional mountain bikers, along with demonstrations, bike games and camping.
Helmets and bikes are available on a limited basis or you may use your own. To pre-register, contact Bicycles Outback at 254-772-2453.
Texas Ranger Museum 40th Anniversary
The Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum will celebrate its 40th anniversary with an exhibit highlighting artifacts acquired each year the museum has been open.
The exhibit will be on display from Nov. 1, 2008 through Oct. 31, 2009. For more information, visit www.texasranger.org or call 750-8631.
Veteran’s Day Parade
The City of Waco invites you to honor our soldiers at the annual Veteran’s Day Parade.
The parade will travel along Austin Avenue on Nov. 11. The parade will start at 11 a.m. For information, call 750-5781.
Youth Basketball
Registration is ongoing for the winter youth basketball league for ages 5 to 14.
The cost is $300 per Division 1 Team or $35 per child. The last day of registration is Friday, Nov. 28 and draft day is the following day with the league beginning Jan. 3. For more information or to register, call 750-5980.
Youth Basketball & Soccer Clinics
Youth of all ages can sharpen their basketball and soccer skills this fall at the City of Waco recreation centers.
Bledsoe-Miller, Dewey and South Waco Recreation Centers will host basketball clinic throughout the month of November. South Waco Recreation Center will also host two soccer clinics every Saturday in November. For information, call 750-5980.
Neighborhood Cleanups
It’s time to cleanup our neighborhoods again. Neighborhood Associations who are planning a Nov. 22 cleanup may contact Keep Waco Beautiful for roll-off containers and trash bags for the Neighborhood Cleanup.
Art Center Clean-up Day
As the Art Center Waco opens its new exhibit, “Art, Science, and the World Around Us,” HOT Master Naturalists and Keep Waco Beautiful volunteers will host a cleanup day to remove invasive vines crowding the native trees and pathways behind the Art Center. They will also paint railings, weed, and much more.
Please join them for this day of cleaning and clearing at Art Center Waco, on the McLennan Community College campus at 1300 College Drive.
Wear long sleeves and closed toed shoes. Gloves and trash bags will be provided. Volunteers will receive a light lunch.
Texas Recycles Day Events
Save paper, cardboard and aluminum from now through Nov. 14, for local schools participating in the McLennan County School Recycle Challenge. Students from the winning school will receive a trip to Sea World in San Antonio. Help a school in your neighborhood as they collect paper and cardboard to recycle. Please recycle your gently worn business clothes, from now until Nov. 14. In celebration of Texas Recycles Day, Keep Waco Beautiful is sponsoring its 2nd Chance Clothes program. Take your gently worn business clothes to Compassion Ministries, 1421 Austin Avenue, or Christian Women’s Job Corps, on the campus of the Methodist Children’s Home at 1111 Herring Avenue, for their residents to use as they interview for jobs and re-enter the workforce. City Auction
The next City of Waco auction is scheduled for Nov. 13. Approximately four times a year, the City posts retired city vehicles and equipment, police abandoned/forfeiture items, jewelry, small tools and miscellaneous items for sale on the Rene’ Bates Internet Auctioneering Web site.
