Summer Activities for Kids in Waco

Summer Camps

Registration is under way for the City of Waco Parks and Recreation Department’s summer camps and athletic programs.

South Waco, Bledsoe-Miller and Dewey recreation centers will offer Summer Day Camps from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekdays for ages 5 to 13. Children will participate in indoor and outdoor activities, arts and crafts, games, field trips and more. The registration fee per child is $50 and the camp cost is $160 per session. Camp Cameron is an outdoor adventure summer camp beginning June 8. The camp is for ages 5 to 13 and will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekdays. The registration fee is $50 per camper and $140 per two week session. Camp Cameron offers campers a mix of environmental and recreational activities such as hiking, archery, kayaking, swimming and nature studies. To register, call 750-5980.

Summer Track

Team Waco is a great way to keep youth active during the summer months. The track and field program provides youth ages 5 to 18 a chance for athletic achievement in a positive setting. College athletes teach the fundamentals of track to team members.

Team Waco practices on weekdays and travel to track meets on the weekend. Participants can advance to the TAAF Games of Texas. Registration is $45 per participant. For information, call 750-5875.

Waco Wave Swim Team

The Waco Wave is back for another season of recreational and competitive swimming. Swimmers ages 5 and up are welcome to join the swim team. Team members compete in local and regional meets and have an opportunity to advance to the TAAF Games of Texas. Registration is $100 per person. Practices begin June 9 at the Waco Water Park. Zoo Adventure Camp

Have you ever wanted to meet a Burmese python, African hedgehog, or an eclectus parrot?

While attending zoo camp, the students are able to see all of these animals and more. During the camps the students are able to get up close and personal with many of our education animals and some of the African animals like to get a closer look at the students! Students who attend zoo camp get to play games, make crafts, and go behind the scenes of Cameron Park Zoo. We have three different curriculums for our week-long camps.

We also offer camps for younger and older students. Zoo Tales is for students 3-5 years of age (June 29-July 1) and Down & Dirty—Keeper Shadowing is for students 12 years and older (July 13-17).

Summer Reading Club

Join the Summer Reading Club to win prizes for reading your favorite books, magazine or audio book. Reading club is for preschool through age 12. Preschoolers participate by listening to stories. Youth are encouraged to keep track of their reading from June 1 through Aug. 15. For more information call 750-5941.

Summer Showcase

The Waco-Mclennan County libraries will entertain children with plays, magic, live animals, music and storytelling during their free Summer Showcase. The fun begins June 9 and runs through Aug. 7. The schedule is listed below.

Volunteen Fair

The Central Library will have a Time Twistin’ Blast Off! party and “Volunteen” Fair on May 16 from 2 to 4 p.m. The celebration will feature Hollywood stuntman Steve Wolf. Angel Paws Reading Buddies

The Central Library is sponsoring the Angel Paws Reading program again this summer. Children can boost their self-esteem and reading skills while reading to our special “Dog Buddies.” Please call 750-5942 for more information or to schedule 30 minute reading sessions.


City General Election

The City of Waco General Election will be held on Saturday May 9 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Voters will select the Council Representatives for Districts II, IV and IV.

To determine your voting location, please refer to your voter registration card for the precinct number. The polling locations are listed on the City of Waco Web site at www.waco-texas.com.

Votación Adelantada para las Elecciones Municipales

Las elecciones municipales se llevarán a cabo el Sábado 9 de Mayo del 2009 de 7 a.m. a 7 p.m. Los Votantes seleccionaran los Representantes del Consejo para los Distritos II, IV y IV.

Beat the Heat at Waco Water Park

Bring the family and spend the day at the Waco Water Park this summer. With two pools and two water slides, the Waco Water Park offers a fun adventure for all ages. This year’s activities will include water aerobics, water volleyball, swim lessons and Dive-In Movies.

Outdoor Family Workshop

The City of Waco and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department will host a weekend of camping and outdoor family activities on May 30-31 in Cameron Park. There will be a fee per family that will include equipment, camp rental, and instructor fees. The registration deadline is May 15. For more information and to register, call 750-5980.


Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day

The cities of Waco, Hewitt, Robinson, Lorena, Lacy Lakeview and Woodway will host a household hazardous waste disposal event on Saturday, May 9. Residents of these cities may bring their waste to the City of Waco Solid Waste Operations Center, 501 Schroeder Drive, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Schroeder Drive is accessible from the 5500 block of Franklin Avenue’s frontage road. Participants may bring automotive, cleaning, gardening and paint products to this free event. Please bring a current water bill and driver’s license as proof of residency of one of the sponsoring cities.

Items such as business, industrial, medical, biological or radioactive waste; ammunition, explosives, fireworks, compressed gas cylinders, gasoline tanks, smoke detectors, industrial dioxins; electronics (such as computers); or containers larger than five gallons will not be accepted. Memorial Day Collection Schedule

The City of Waco will not offer solid waste collection services on Monday, May 25, due to the Memorial Day Holiday.The landfill and Cobbs Recycling Center will also be closed for the holiday. Monday’s routes will be picked up Wednesday, May 27. All other routes will be picked up on schedule. For more information, please call 299-2612.


The good times and great music continue on May 1 in downtown Waco with the Brazos Nights Cinco de Mayo celebration. Presented by La Ley 104.1 FM, the concert will feature Waco blues rockers Pride and Joy and the regional Mexican sounds of Aliados de la Sierra.

Waco Transit Free Fare Day

Waco Transit and organizations within the City have partnered together to offer a Free Fare Day on May 16. Cameron Park Zoo and the Waco Water Park are offering discounts on admission into the parks. Children will be able to get in free with a paying adult when you ride the shuttle bus. There will be a shuttle running every 30 minutes from the main terminal on 8th street that will stop at Heritage Square downtown to pick up those who choose to park and ride the bus to the destinations. Having Fun in the Kitchen

The Waco-McLennan County Public Health District is sponsoring “Having Fun in the Kitchen” classes for parents and their children. The classes will be held May 13 and 27 from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Vegetables will be the topic and main ingredients in the recipes. The class will be offered again June 10 and 24 with the focus on protein. For more information or to register, call 750-5403.


City Auction

The next City of Waco auction is scheduled for May 21. Approximately four times a year, the City posts retired city vehicles and equipment, police abandoned/forfeiture items, jewelry, small tools and miscellaneous items for sale on the Rene’ Bates Internet Auctioneering Web site.
